Mechanism of action
Valproic acid dissociates to the valproate ion in the gastrointestinal tract. It increases gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the brain, thereby increasing inhibitory activity and stabilising nerve cell excitability to prevent seizures.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated; causes major birth defects. Breastfeeding: Limited use; discuss with specialist.
