Mechanism of action
Ketoconazole inhibits the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme 14-alpha demethylase. This disruption impairs the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane, resulting in inhibition of fungal growth and cell death.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Potential risk; avoid use unless necessary. Breastfeeding: Secreted into breast milk; avoid breastfeeding.
