Chronic hepatitis C is a long-term infection of the liver with the hepatitis C virus, spread through blood. It can cause no symptoms for years, then slowly lead to liver scarring (cirrhosis), liver failure and liver cancer.

Medicines used to treat Chronic Hepatitis C
How it’s treated
Modern direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) cure more than 95% of people with a tablet course of 8 to 12 weeks. They target the virus directly:
- Sofosbuvir, combined with ledipasvir, velpatasvir or daclatasvir.
- Ribavirin is added in some harder-to-treat cases.
The exact combination depends on the viral genotype and any liver damage. These regimens are interferon-free.
UK status
All hepatitis C antivirals are prescription-only (POM), started and monitored by specialist liver or infectious-disease services. There is no over-the-counter option. Treatment is available on the NHS as part of a national elimination programme.
