Mechanism of action

Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue. It replaces protective prostaglandins in the stomach, reducing acid secretion and increasing mucous production. In obstetric use, it acts on the cervix and uterus to cause contraction and softening.

Pregnancy: causes uterine contractions; contraindicated unless used for indicated pregnancy procedures.
