Mechanism of action
Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue. It replaces the protective prostaglandins often depleted by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the stomach lining, increasing bicarbonate production and reducing acid secretion.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated due to risk of inducing labour or miscarriage. Breastfeeding: Excreted in breast milk.
