Patient summary
This medicine is developed to target parasitic infestations like strongyloidiasis and is intended to alleviate symptoms by eradicating the underlying parasite.
Mechanism of action
Ivermectin binds selectively to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This increases the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, resulting in hyperpolarisation of the nerve or muscle cell, resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite.
