Patient summary
This medication is utilized to treat gouty arthritis and is indicated to alleviate recurrent uric acid accumulation.
Mechanism of action
Allopurinol acts by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase. This enzyme is responsible for the catabolism of hypoxanthine and xanthine to uric acid. By blocking this pathway, allopurinol lowers serum and urinary uric acid levels, reducing the risk of crystal formation.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed. Breastfeeding: Excreted in breast milk, use caution.
