Mechanism of action

Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative that disrupts bacterial and protozoal metabolic processes. Once inside the cell, it is reduced, creating intermediates that damage DNA, thereby inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis and causing cell death.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Avoid during the first trimester. Breastfeeding: Suspend breastfeeding during treatment.
