Patient summary
Utilized to target bacterial and protozoal infection to alleviate symptoms and resolve the underlying infection.
Mechanism of action
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative that disrupts bacterial and protozoal metabolic processes. Once inside the cell, it is reduced, creating intermediates that damage DNA, thereby inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis and causing cell death.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Avoid during the first trimester. Breastfeeding: Suspend breastfeeding during treatment.
